Whether you saw it coming or not, Facebook overtaking Google for the prize of most-visited website is a pretty big deal.

While Facebook’s margin is very slim at the moment, their market share is up 185% compared with the same week in 2009, according to Hitwise. In the recent article “Facebook More Popular Than Google? Let the Ad Wars Begin,” Fast Company’s Kit Eaton examines the implications of these two powerhouses going toe-to-toe. Although no one is challenging Google’s search engine business, Facebook is piling up new members with no end in sight. Eaton states that “advertisers will begin to do the math and work out which site will get their ads in front of more eyeballs.”

While Facebook’s monumental rise says a great deal about online behavior trends, Google still holds the upper hand when it comes to higher conversion rates for products and services. So while Facebook has reason to celebrate, it won’t last long if they don’t answer the big question:  Will users start to pay more attention to ads?

SSN Take: Take advantage of marketing tactics that benefit from the growing number of Facebook users and watch closely as the face-off over ad conversions unfolds.
