Summing up the event of today’s television watching whether it is purely entertainment or a getaway from one’s own life is the subject of the article, “Defining The Television Experience in a Single Word“.

Also discussed in the article are the pros and cons regarding the latest in TV viewing such as Smart TV, Social TV and Second Screen capabilities.

The editor, Jeremy Toeman, founder of Dijit Media, made this comment:

“My newest golden rule of creating TV technology and experiences is this: If the product doesn’t take “escape” into account in a major way, it is utterly doomed to fail.”

This summation of the “typical” North American household watching TV for 4+ hours is probably right on the mark. Unfortunately, while moving forward with technology in the home entertainment industry, families and people in general are sometimes less likely to depend on their own innate skills. Also, escaping into someone else’s existence, as this story suggests, puts a limit on creative and social talents.

Apps For TwitchTV Expanding

April 11th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Features | Gaming | social media | video - (0 Comments)

TwitchTV, an online video platform designed for broadcasting and viewing people playing video games live, is the subject of an article called “16M Users Strong, TwitchTV Takes Live-Streamed Gaming Portal Mobile with iPad And Android Apps“. TwitchTV had previously only been available on the iPhone but because of user demand now has an app for the Android community and will soon support iOS for the iPad.

Not only is TwitchTV expanding their availability in mobile devices they seem to have gaming plans too.  They have grown their network of game development partners from 500 to 1500. Some of the “social” interactions include live video game battles and commentary from popular games like Halo: Reach.

The article provides some insight into the growth:

Emmett Shear, CEO of TwitchTV, tell us that having a bigger mobile presence is a huge deal for platform since “the single most requested feature by our community since we launched has been the ability to watch and chat from phones and tablets.” He added that TwitchTV’s userbase is fairly split between Android and iOS.

Ask and you shall receive is the message here. It is nice to read product success stories and that is just what this information represents. When developers listen to the end users and incorporate their demands, growth and success will follow.

In The TechRepublic.com article “The Beginning of the End of Google+” Adam Metz predicts that Google’s social networking effort may already be on its way out. He points to Amir Efrati’s February article in the Wall Street Journal where all of the most prominent social networking sites are listed by order of average minutes of use. Not surprisingly Facebook ranks number one with 405 minutes while tumblr has 89 and Twitter 21. Last on the list is Google+ with an average of only three minutes of use per session.

The New York Times joined the argument in support of Google saying that 50 million people (out of 100 million registered) with Google+ accounts use the network in conjunction with enhanced Google products. Metz points out that these products include the first and third most popular sites on the web: Google and Youtube.

According to Metz:

“Google is a fish out of water – they’re a great search and advertising company that is simply not good at making social media products used by consumers (or even B2B collaboration). Now’s the time to shutter Google+, and consign it to the dust-heap where many of their other social products lie (Jaiku, Google Buzz, and Google Wave to name a few), and allocate all that Google+ talent to doing what the company does best – selling a ton of advertising in a way that really resonates with its customers.”

While Metz makes a few salient points in his article we think this prediction is coming far too early. There are a number of Google apps besides the likes of Youtube that can also be enhanced in fascinating ways like their proven video chat feature. Google+ is purposefully a different experience than Facebook and the functionality—while different than that of the number one site—is being used by a growing number of registered users. To bolster growth Google needs to step up marketing for their network so the scores of people who do create accounts are made aware of what makes Google+ a unique and useful experience. That they have not yet seems very un-Google.

The newest SSN Minute video is posted, and the topic is trading in a social media strategy for social strategies.

A company needs to focus on how it is affecting people, not just using social media options.

“Before pushing a product or building buzz, a company should carefully consider whether its efforts are aimed at creating meaningful value or merely increasing profits.”

The video is posted at YouTube.

The March 4, 2010 SSN Minute takes a look at a potentially disruptive acquisition. Is Microsoft preparing to buy Twitter.com? Microsoft is once again taking steps to improve its infrastructure. Steve Ballmer wants Bing.com to be bigger than Google. One bold step would be snapping up one of the hottest social media companies. To get the SSN take on this possible move, click here.
